The colour and texture of the skin both resemble that of a lime. The fruit has distinctive aromatics both sweet and tart and suggestive of its tropical flavors. The flesh is dense, grainy and creamy, similar to the flesh of a ripe pear. The flesh contains a jelly-like seed cavity. Its flavours are a combination of strawberry, guava and pineapple. The entire fruit is edible.
Ripe feijoa's are soft to the touch. Once opened you can see it's ripe when the jelly-like centre is clear; the flesh nearer the skin remains more opaque. A white centre is under-ripe, this will taste quite sharp and a brown centre is over-ripe.
